Quick recipe for covering small bits of grey
I’ve used Rainbow henna off and on over the years. I decided to go back because I couldn’t find the Indian brand I used around me and my only alternative was LUSH which is useless at covering greys. This isn’t “real” henna however, it works really well for my hair type and it doesn’t give me breathing problems. I’m pregnant and I feel safe using it. My recipe for my hair to cover 1% gray: 12 oz boiled strong caffeinated coffee, 1 tbsp olive oil, 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar, 4 discs of cocoa butter, and 4 oz of henna. My hair is to my bra strap. Boil the coffee over a double boiler (just a pot of water with a bowl over it). Break up the cocoa butter till it’s pretty much disappeared. Add the vinegar. Remove from pot. Slowly add the henna into coffee mixture and then I use a chopstick to stir it till it’s smooth. Dear god, use gloves and line your bathroom in garbage bags. I use Abolene around my hair line so the sloppy spills can be easily cleaned up. Slap it onto to divided clipped up hair, I usually have 8 sections. Put a plastic cap on (or grocery bag if you ran out of them). Clean up the mess I’ve made in the bathroom. I then blast my hair with the hair dryer for five minutes and get the heat under the plastic. Wrap a towel over the plastic to seal the heat in. Set a timer for 1 hr. Watch Netflix in the bathtub with a face mask on and drink hot cocoa. Use only conditioner to wash it out. Don’t shampoo for a few days so the color fully sets (takes 48 hrs, then you can wash). The cocoa butter leaves your hair moisturized and shiny. This recipe leaves my hair very soft, shiny, and gives it a deep color. If you mess up or make it too dark, I’ve used organic dish soap (like 7th gen) to wash it out. Otherwise, it’ll take 4-6 weeks and it’ll fade out as it’s not “real” henna. I have gotten chemical dyes after waiting the 6 weeks and going to the salon. Make sure to tell them before and bring the Rainbow container so they can look at it. I’ve never had a problem going back and forth with this brand as it’s not strong and fades. Other hennas I have.

Rainbow Henna is a True Blessing! Healthy Safe Color like Natural Hair Color - Amazing!
This product just blows my mind. I switched from chemical hair colors to using natural henna because my hair stopped growing, was super thinning, turned white, and was receding. By using this and other natural henna products, my hair started growing back and in color! This signaled to me that it was not age but the harsh chemicals of bad hair products that caused my hair and scalp issues. I did some research on those chemicals of the other hair products and it is very scary what one finds. I am SO HAPPY I made the switch to natural henna. This particular product works faster than my other henna product and it matches my natural dark brown hair color exactly. It smells and looks like matcha tea, which is far superior to chemicals. It does not burn your head like chemicals do. And this even nourishes your hair. For new people switching over, your chemical hair will turn black until it grows out and gets cut off. Then the henna will work with your natural hair adding nice diverse color tones (from copper, red, brown, to black) based on your own various shades. It is so much prettier. People often think I have costly highlights (more so with the medium brown henna, or reds, than the dark brown option). MY PROCESS: I add cinnamon dashes, dash of vanilla, a spoon of instant coffee, and a spoon of lime or lemon, to the hot water and henna mix. I use the same hair paint brush that the salon uses for highlights and peel through each row layer from ear to ear over the top of my head at 1/2 cm row increments. The henna mix is like mud on your head. I put on a disposable plastic shower cap to encapsulate and activate the product with warmth. I put cotton rounds on my ears for comfort and drips. I put a black durag on for added henna activating warmth and so I don't look too scary. I leave the henna in for 3-4 hours. (Directions say 40-60 minutes for this product.) It dries like dirt and can be challenging and messy to rinse out, the longer you go. While in the shower, a wide comb and some conditioner on the ends helps. For 2-3 days, no shampoo, no oils, no conditioner on the parts where you want the henna to stay! This process might be too much for some people, but for my good health, good smells, and beautiful hair, I find this product to be an absolute blessing. The process is just part of my life now. Oh, and, I only do henna once a month now, that's only 12 times a year out of 365 days! This compared to the twice a month with the chemicals option because of that harsh hair grow line. Henna fades, so there is no harsh grow line, and it looks much more natural as your hair grows, so you can go longer between servicing it. And the amount of money you save?! Hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars. Plus your health! I highly recommend going to RAINBOW's official website. There is a lot of good information to read there. Good luck everybody! Stay healthy. Thanks Rainbow! Sincerely, Grateful

Been using this for 4 years and love it!!
This henna is great, it lasts a long time and gives hair some strength when it's fine or wispy. The Deep Sable color is like a 2 with some #4, which is a nice soft natural brown with chestnut highlights where you have lighter hair or gray hair. I use Coffee, Lemon Juice, clays, essential oils and hair oils in the blend for a very thorough treatment and color. This color is permanent and fades slightly over time, but since there is no damage or breakage, then I reapply. Very economical to use!! UPDATE: I wanted a darker color and mixed 1/3 black and 2/3 dark brown for really nice darkest brown with copperish highlights where the hair is completely white.

easy application, good results. some pros & things to do differently next time
Conventional chemical hair dyes caused my scalp to itch & burn. My stylist recommended that I try foils as the dye doesn't touch the scalp. It worked but within a week my roots started to show. At over $90 a treatment, this is just not acceptable! So I started looking for natural alternatives. I've known about henna for years but had heard that non-red colors were achieved by mixing with toxic metals, so was surprised to learn that pure, natural options are now available. Rainbow henna promises a range of color options. With some trepidation, I tried the dark brown henna-indigo mix. It was surprisingly easy and much less messy than I expected. I mixed the henna-indigo powder with fresh-brewed coffee to the consistency of thick-ish cake batter, poured it in a plastic applicator bottle, pulled on gloves, parted my hair & applied to my roots starting at the forehead going back. After applying several rows of the mixture, I massaged it into the roots, covered with a plastic shower cap plus towel on top of shower cap. I omitted the apple cider vinegar as I didn't have any on hand but will add it the next time. 70 minutes later, it rinsed off easily with conditioner (no shampoo). My hair dried baby soft and super shiny! I was disappointed at first when I looked in the mirror as only about half of my gray hair had taken the dye. But to my surprise, my hair continued to darken over the next 2 days and now the grey is almost 75% colored! One more application should do it. I am thrilled! No toxic chemicals, no itchy, burning scalp, no mess. (Between the applicator bottle, shower cap, and towel, I didn't spill a drop of the henna 'batter' and my towel and old t-shirt didn't get a single stain). My hair is soft, shiny & bouncy and has beautifully blended color. Also, you can't beat the price. Compare $11.33 for 8 oz of the Rainbow Henna mix (I used *maybe* an ounce on my short hair) to $90 for a single coloring at my salon. No contest. Next time I will be sure to also use apple cider vinegar and leave it in longer (2-3 hours?) before rinsing. I will also switch to the light brown henna mix as the dark brown is virtually black. It would have been helpful to have clearer directions (powder measurements in tea/tablespoons vs grams) as there was a little too much guesswork involved for my comfort. It will be interesting to see how well this holds up to continued shampooing (will it fade?) and multiple applications (will it get even darker? Will build-up make my hair dull and heavy?). On the basis of a single application so far - I highly recommend! Update: After 2 applications, the color seemed to become more red and less brown. My friends told me they could see a clear demarcation between my natural hair color and the henna uptake so I decided to go darker. So I went to the 2-step hendigo process and the color worked out much better. The only problem was an itchy scalp that lasted for days possibly due to not co-washing as I wanted to ensure the indigo dye uptake. Next time I will add aloe powder to the henna and co-wash after indigo application and hope that takes care of the itch. Update: adding aloe powder is very helpful & significantly cuts down on the itch. A tip: I replaced the towel with a ski cap on top of the shower cap. It feels light & comfortable, stays on easier, doesn’t need constant adjustments, & no one can tell I’m in the process of dying my hair.

great product, great price
For the price, it did an amazing job. Henna and Indigo are already mixed in together. All you gotta do is add hot water and mix it well, apply it to your hair, leave it on with the shower cap. I failed to heat it with my hairdryer, so the result was rather incomplete, some gray wasn't completely dark, but I blame myself for it. Otherwise, it really did a great job darkening my hair evenly without red tint or anything. The smell is like dried grass, which I love. I left it on for an hour and half, as the instruction says 75 minutes if you don't use heat. I guess it was a little short, or I did need heat after all. But I'm happy with the result. Another surprise was, I didn't know there were 2 containers in the package. So when I opened the package, I was pleasantly surprised. That means one container costs less than $7, and I didn't even use the whole container for my short hair. Folks, it's a bargain! I would definitely buy it again.

not quite dark enough even for dark brown
i'm not that actual user of the product however i did assist in its use. my wife is almost 50(!) - she used to pluck out her white hairs - i told her to stop doing that because then your body think you don't need or want hair and it will just stop producing it. better to have greys than none at all - i also forbade her from using those really harsh chemicals. she's used to have very soft fine hairs but after years of those harsh chemicals it changed the texture of her hair - i believe in its own defense it adjusted itself from being chemically attacked so it produced coarser hair. i knew i wanted a more natural method that didn't have any carcinogenic properties - we all live in a world where everything seems to be a carcinogen - so reducing exposure is key. anyway after much research and not much of a choice we settled on henna. the henna (dark brown) came in a powder form and it looks green. to me it smells like matcha powder - you have to mix it with boiling water in order to activate the darkening capabilities of it - initially she left it on for 4 hours and nothing happened. then she tried it again and left it on for prob almost 8 hours - it did color her hair but it was more of a light brown color - basically it looks like highlights. she did it again a month later and she left it on for another 8 hours or so but we put hot towels on her head (she was wearing a shower cap to maintain hydration of the henna) - switching out the hot towel every now and then. another month later she i added coffee into the mixture and also an electric heating pad - but the coffee and electric heating pad didn't seem to make much of a difference. the henna made my wifes hair a bit smoother i feel - the color should be darker i feel but i'm not sure where the weakness in the methods we're employing. bottom line is it's chemical free and it's coming out more like highlights than dark brown. thanks for reading
