What filters smaller particles, 5 or 20 microns?

The size (e.g. 5 microns) indicated is the smallest particle size that this particular filter will filter out. So a 20 micron filter will capture particles down to 20 microns, but the 19 and 18 and 17, etc. micron -sized particles will pass right through it.So, to answer your question, the 5 micron filter will filter out smaller particles.

How long should 1 filter last?

The life of the filter is really dictated my amount of particulate in the water and usage. In my case the filter is the first stage on a well on the coast of California and needs replacing on the order of every other month. Usage is a single family house of 2 people.
