Is a size 16 a large or xlarge? The size chart is not helpful for these sizes.

X-Large. I was hoping it was a 16 (grandson's size) . It fit him good.

Your son wears men's sizes. Depending on weight, possibly medium in shirts and pants. Boys clothes will most likely be too short for him. My son is 14, 140lbs, 5ft 9in and wears shirts in men's small for an almost (al little big) fitted look and men's medium for something to grow into. Boys t-shirts or polos size 18 or XXL are very fitted or slim look on him. He's a 31x32 in men's chinos (for extra space and length, but not baggy), stretch chinos 30x32. Hope this helps.
