I think you're right that the SAS data connector is backwards compatible to a SATA drive. The opposite is not true: not forwards compatible from a SATA data connector to a SAS. But the power you'll just have to connect separately to your SATA drive like you already do. Unlike with a SAS drive, you can't stack the power connector onto this cables drive-end connector. Does that make sense?
