For me, this book answered a lot of questions I had about the region, and introduced material that I did not know existed. The information about "Perito" Moreno, and how he became "perito" (an expert) was very interesting. The book is not super in-depth and scholarly, but written more for those of us who know a bit about Argentine history, but don't really know how Patagonia fits in. I really liked the author's explanation of the great sheep drive, as well. This is not a book for "trekkers," but instead is for those of us interested in South America and how things got going.

Traveling to Patagonia has long been a bucket list item for me, one I finally achieved on a recent cruise. The land is magical, and this book provided the history of the people and culture that satisfied my immense curiosity of this special place on the planet. I was able to follow along with a map I purchased in Usuhaia and Google Earth. The author's ability to present both the good and the bad moments of its history is commendable and appreciated.

The best book I read about Patagonia. If you want to learn the history of this incredible part of world, in a very fluid and engaging style, with very good fact research, by someone that is clearly passioned and lived in Patagonia, you can’t go wrong. By the end of the book I was already getting sad that it was ending.
