So just got my gallon jug in... It has a slight odor to it but its pink in color, not dark or anything...is it still good?

Absolutely. I have used a lot of this stuff, and have received it in slightly brown colors all the ways to the pinkish color, and it always has an earthy odor to it. It always has worked for me.

Will it work if I put it before adding ammonia to the tank?

Assume you're using the ammonia to cycle/start a new tank? Pure ammonia is not to be added if there will be fish in the tank, only when doing a fish-less cycle; the fish and their waste will supply the ammonia for the bacteria to grow and survive; be sure to keep testing the parameters of the water with a test kit; look up the nitrogen cycle
