Nice antique reproduction, looks nice works well.
This is a reproduction of an antique magnifier, with all the virtues and limitations of the original... It looks very nice, the MDF base is finished to look almost like real wood. It has a reproduction of the original maker's badge on the base, but there is enough room that one could add a small additional inscribed plate to make a special award or trophy. It is NOT illuminated (might be an interesting project to add an LED, and it does not fold down to as compact a package as one might expect. I also found the adjusting screws had a tendency to loosen when moving the arm around (probably just like the original) However it was easy to adjust otherwise. The lens seemed to be quite clear and did a good job of magnification. From a purely functional standpoint, a more modern design with LED illumination, and an easier to use positioning system might be better. However if wanting a retro-look that still works well, this seems a good choice.

Bad material!
This is a nice looking piece until you get to the base. The base, which is cosmetically dressed to appear as if it were real wood, is quite obviously not. It appears someone drew lines to give it a wood grain, before shellacing over it. I closely inspected it, and finnally took a knife and cut a piece out of the bottom back of the base. It is definitely made of MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard), highly compressed paper dust. It is not mentioned in the advertisement. If you ever spill something on your desk, and it gets to this MDF base, it will ruin it. If moisture gets to the base, it will ruin it. The metal parts also my not be brass as stated in the advertisement. The ring which holds the glass, may be, but the other parts appear to be a different metal. This is definitely not worth the price they are charging for this desk magnifier! I have searched the web for a similar item with no results. Since I cannot find a suitable replacement for what I want, I will have to keep this desk magnifier, and cut a base from solid wood and toss the manufacturer's inferior base. I can live with the part brass, part other metal materials.

Disappointed
Scratch in the center of the glass (photo doesn’t do justice) and the screw for the magnify head is defective/broken. Otherwise looks cool. It’s such a hassle to re-package things like this. I’m disappointed.

Looks good and works. Not cheaply made.
Looks good and works. The quality of this magnifying glass is really superior. It magnifies throughout the entire glass. The way it looks is authentic vintage. It’s heavy weight and it’s adjustable. If you’re looking for something to put in your home library, this is what you need to buy. Granted it is a replica of an antique Victorian magnifying glass but, it is really worth the money! Easily five stars.
