I am a fan of Mardel Rubio's coloring designs. In this coloring book, he has left behind his “doodle” creatures and presents beautiful mermaids as Sirens of the sea. His mermaids has a slight Asian flair to them, not only in looks but in the clothing and accoutrements which surround them. The designs are detailed and some have intricate and small areas to color. While most of the designs are of mermaids, there are some merman designs included as well. Most of the pages are black line designs on white; however, some have black printed backgrounds. There is a fairly heavy use of black on some designs (especially on the hair of the mermaids). You are still able to color the hair as you wish; however the accent color will be black. This coloring book has been published in a format that sets a high bar for other publishers to emulate. Not only is the paper a good heavy weight, it also has great tooth, is printed one-sided, has excellent perforations and, best of all, has a covered spiral binding that makes opening and laying this book flat a breeze. This is what I found in coloring in this book and testing my coloring medium on the paper 41 Mermaid designs including one “poster” page that is a double size fold-out page. Printed on one side of the page Paper is white, medium/heavy weight, rough with excellent tooth and perforated pages Binding is spiral with the cover protecting the spiral. The book lays flat in the open position for ease of coloring. The designs stop short of the perforations and removing pages is very easy if you wish to do so. There are unfinished elements at all edges of the page Alcohol based markers bleed through this paper. If you use this coloring medium, I highly suggest that you either remove pages before coloring, or as I do, use card stock or several sheets of paper as a blotter below the working page. That will keep the pages or the surface below from being marred. Water based markers, India ink pens and gel pens do not bleed through the paper though some left the slight shadow of the back of the page. Coloring pencils extremely worked well. The paper is definitely rough to the touch and has excellent tooth for pencils. Both oil and wax based pencils worked very well for providing good pigment. I was able to layer the same color for deeper tones, layer multiple colors and to blend easily using a pencil style blending stick as well as wet blending medium for excellent results. Review: The Perfect Colourists Colouring Book !! - This book is not your average colouring book !!! It has hidden spiral binding , I say hidden as the front cover page hides the wire , so excellent for placing on your shelf like any other book ! Next it has the most amazing paper , very toothy and coloured pencils work brilliantly , while the paper also stands up to markers and other mediums . I haven't tried watercolour paint but I suspect if not overly wet the paper will hold up well .I wish every book used this paper !! It is also perforated so pages are easily removable !!!! Next the artwork.. there are beautiful mermaids , a few mermen which is a rarity in the colouring world and gorgeous underwater worlds. The style of art is very unique to the illustrator and personally I love it. I have seen comments on some reviews about the faces and personally I find them beautiful, I do find beauty in most things, and find some of these previous comments rather shallow, not everything in life is perfect. Mardel Rubio and his publishers have made a book containing an amazing collection of artwork on the best paper ever.!! Looking forward to more of these Artist Editions books !!

Beautiful Quality Coloring Book
Absolutely Beautiful Coloring Book. The pictures are gorgeous. The pages are very thick paper/light cardstock. Pages are 8x11. I love Mardel Rubio's work. I have all of his books. I especially love this one because it is on such good paper. His others have been on cheaper, thin paper. Also the pages are one sided so you can use your markers if you want. His work is always varied so you never get bored. I love how the mermaids look. Some have more of an Asia-Pacific look to them, some of a more Anglo Saxon look. Some one said there were duplicate pictures, I have looked and have only seen new original pictures on every page. I find the varied faces beautiful and enjoy coloring culturally different pictures. This book is also spiral bound. The pictures are not framed but I prefer this style. I'm giving this book 5 stars, it trully is going to be a treat to color.

Artist Needs to Work on Faces of Mermaids
Disappointed because too many of the mermaids are not pretty like those on the cover. Many have no necks and the faces look like they have been plucked off of the pages of someone practicing how to draw faces and flunked big time. Hair mostly long and black so it could not be colored like the cover piece. I like the paper, the perforated pages and the spiral binding, but not most of the mermaids--the purpose for buying this book. Some friend should have told him how ugly some of these images are. (I am adding that I just accented the black hair with a glitter pen and it looks pretty good! Some of the backgrounds in this book are really nice--so please, get help with the faces with no necks and pinched noses and your next book could be really special.) I'm back after coloring four pages. Faber Castel colored pencils don't work well on this paper, even after many layers of color.

A Colorist's Dream
I love the spiral binding and perforated pages in this book. I ALWAYS remove my page from the book before I start coloring and this format makes it so easy. I wish more publishers would consider how many people are using their completed coloring pages today--not only as a stress relieving pass time but also as art to decorate their homes or as gifts for family and friends. The beautful artwork is detailed enough to make the drawings very interesting but not so detailed as to make the pages seem overwhelming. The paper is a good thickness and takes both colored pencils and water based markers quite well. The variety of scenes is also good and it's nice to see a few mermen included also. I have already completed 2 pictures and look forward to working on the next. If only I had more time...
