Not suitable for younger children.
I bought this as wanted to get some traditional wooden toys for my daughter. It says suitable from 12 months, however my daughter (9 months old) is still putting things in her mouth, so as soon as I opened this, she pulled the pegs out and shoved them in her mouth. They are the perfect size for choking, so I have put it away until she is older. I thought the pegs would be stuck in and just pop up and down where they are, but they come out all together. I would therefore recommend that you supervise small children at all times with this toy. The toy itself is beautifully and simply made. Its good quality and came nicely boxed. Its a classic toy that won't date and I'm sure will be a firm favourite when the time is right. I would like to add that now my daughter is one she loves this toy! So much so that she has one at home & one at her grandparents house. She loves putting the pegs in the holes and loves pressing them so the bounce out. A very simple but successful and well loved toy!

My 14 month old loves it. It's good value, simple and fun.
I bought this for my son as I wanted him to have some toys that were wood, not only plastic. He's at the right age to be interested in things that "pop-up" and so this seemed the best of both worlds, and a good price too. He loves it! And it's a big hit with other children that come to visit as well, so far up to age 3. Later I'm sure it will also be helpful for learning and matching colours, but right now he's just enjoying the simple cause and effect. He likes that he can put the pegs in himself and then he can take them out, ping them out, bounce them up and down... Interestingly he's very specific about putting the pegs in the right way around (with the faces at the top end), which is a play/learning element I hadn't even considered. Those pegs do roll though! Maybe the manufacturer could give them slightly flatter sides - like a pencil shaft or something? But until then, keep an eye out that you don't slip over on them, or try and keep track for when they roll under the fridge etc. If you're looking for a well priced, fun, to be much played with present for a 1st birthday - this will tick all of those boxes.

The only baby toy where the baby ignores the box!
I'm on baby number 4 so have seen many Christmases and birthdays already. This toy has been on my lists in the past, but somehow always got overlooked until this year. I guess it was on the recommendation of a few friends that the toys was fantastic for babies that made me finally buy it (or, err, was that Santa who bought it???). Anyway, the bottom line is that my 9-month-old truly loves this toy. He even started crawling (finally) so he could reach it. He picks up the pegs, he mouths them, gums them, bangs them together, makes a little hammering action against the pegs that are still in their holes. He picks up the main block and turns it over and over, looking at the holes and the coloured swatches on the side. I presume, as he gets older, he'll start tucking the pegs into the holes and then, even later, learn to launch them from their spring-loaded bases. The toy feels good to hold because it's wooden, and the pegs are such a good size and weight. The little happy faces drawn on them are something that my baby is already responding to, turning the pegs around until he sees them. Best of all, it's made in Cheshire, England. And it's cheaper in England than in the US. (I can tell you that *that's* a surprise!). Bottom line: buy the toy for your first baby. Buy it for your friends' babies. I'm just about to buy one for my nephew who's 6 months old, and wish I'd bought it for my own, older kids before now, so we could have had that much more enjoyment from it. Oh, and the other thing I really like about it? No batteries required. UPDATE: The 9-month old is now almost 4, and he still *loves* this toy! Now the little men talk to each other, and he is very specific about putting the right coloured man in the right coloured hole. He sometimes uses a toy hammer on it, though is quite careful not to hit his men too hard. I just can't believe how CLASSIC this toy really is.

We got this for our so at about 9-10mo. He is now over 2 and still thinks it a hilarious and fascinating toy. To start with we would make the little stick figures fly to much laughter and surprise. Eventually he could press them down himself, then he learned the technique of making them fly really high. Now he also sorts them by colour. It might look a simple toy but it has staying power! (We have used other similar popping toys but found this the simplest and easiest for younger kids to use as the sticks are all the same length and fit in all holes.)

I love how my baby skills improved using this toy Initially he mastered putting the wooden man in opening and then he knew how to let it pop up
