How do these differ to the ATH M40x in terms of sound? Is there a lot of difference?

From having listened to both models of the AT headphones you are referring, I can honestly say, that it is completely a matter of opinion and dependent on what it is that you want from the headphones. The ATH-M40x's are designed and tuned to have a completely flat frequency response for accurate audio monitoring across an extended frequency range, making them ideal for any studio scenario and they are built incredibly well. Both headphones are rugged and offer good sound isolation and the M30x's do do a great job here.The obvious point to make is that there is a difference in price and as with most AT products, the higher the price, the better the product. The M40x's are built better, have a flatter frequency response and all round are a better pair of headphones, however, coming back to my first point, it is all a matter of opinion. I cannot say to you really that the M40x's are better than the M30x's, as it does all depend on taste and you may well find that you prefer one to the other after listening to them.If you are serious about getting these headphones, then I would recommend finding a local retailer near you and actually going to try them out, it would be well worth it. Do these leak a lot and would they be suitable for buses, planes etc?

No, they don't leak sound. Suitable anywhere. I use daily on the train with maximum volume sometimes and no sound leaks out.

How do these compare to the M20X in terms of sound quality? I don't mind about accuracy so much as a nice sound with some good bass

I've never tried the M20X to give a comparison. Regarding the M30X: I bought them to act as a back up pair of headphones in my home studio originally, but they have since become my first choice for mixing. I find that stereo separation and placing of instruments across the mix to be highly accurate. Bass response is also impressive; sounding more accurate to the tonal quality of the instruments and not over powered. Build quality also impressed me, the lead is a decent length and allows freedom of movement while recording, the connection between cable and jack-plug is strong and the quality of plastics is high considering the price range.
