Excellent phone holder, this was bought for a Smart ForTwo / ForFour 453 - these cars are problematic for putting a phone holder anywhere because of the unusual dashboard layout which prevents one from being fitted in most places. This is pretty much the only solution to the problem in one of these cars and works very very well. The cup holder mount works flawlessly and is adjustable to fit different sized cup holders by means of turning a wheel to make the sides expand out with rubberised arms to grip the insides of your car cup holder. This gives a very secure grip, and the expanding arms of the phone grip have good tension on them to hold your phone securely and is also adjustable to move up/down/left/right for a good viewing angle. The phone holder opens wide enough to hold my iPhone 8 Plus but won’t open much wider than that, but phones don’t get that much bigger than that anyway. Recommended for cup holders at the front, but doesn’t work well in narrow openings next to the handbrake in my Renault Clio IV as room is too limited to be useful.

My experience with suction/windscreen phone holders has always ended with the holder and phone detaching from the windscreen and inevtiably falling into the footwell while driving. There are many unknown brand cup mount phone holders available, but most have a long neck which means the phone will vibrate while driving. This is is pricey, but it works. It locks firmly into the cup holder. It's 'stumpy' and therefore sturdy. It convincingly grips my wide heavy phone which doesn't vibrate while driving.

First off, it's incredibly annoying that Amazon are listing products that are nothing like each other on the same page. The different products listed here may be car holders but they're completely different; they aren't just different colours or sizes of the same thing. If I'm in the market for a cup holder mount I'm not interested reviews for the windscreen or air vent mount. Now to the review. The quality of this mount is excellent: build is solid and the rubber and plastic used is good quality. It almost feels Apple worthy in its sturdiness. I can't quite say the same for the design, though. The rotating neck which causes three wedges to extend from the side of the cup holder insert to hold the mount in place is a good idea that works well. Unfortunately, since you can't rotate the top of the mount relative to the bottom, if your cupholder is shaped such that one of the legs disappears into a gap in the holder it can be hard or impossible to position the holder and phone properly. Also, the phone clamp is a bit fiddly. I bought this for my iPhone 6S Plus and it fits well, but I have to use one hand to hold the clamp arms open while using the other to put the phone in place and being careful not to let the clamps go on the lower volume button - so I can't just drop my phone in with one and and drive, which is quite annoying. And a few times I've wondered why I can't hear anything coming over the stereo only to find the clamp had caught the volume button and turned it all the way down. Positioning in my 3 Series F30 is about as good as it gets, though. The phone is on the same level as my gear stick so I can use the touch screen with my arm at resting level and without having to concentrate on keeping my hand steady. It sits just clear of the stereo above and my traction control buttons below, obscuring neither. I don't think there's anywhere else on the dashboard such a large phone could go without obscuring anything. In short, I can recommend this - but it's not perfect, and if you're reading this in a few months' time I'd check to see if something better has since been released.

This phone holder is perfect for those who don’t have suitable air vents or dashboards for using standard device holders, and no messy suction cups that block your field of vision when driving. It has a good weight to it so feels very well made. You put it into your cup holder and twist a grooved ring which expands the main body, ensuring a snug fit for all sizes of well. The ball joint is firm and allows for repositioning of your device without shaking or sagging. Best device holder I’ve ever had. If you have a suitable cup holder, you can’t go wrong with this.

Excellent phone holder

I purchased the cup holder version. For my car, which has no gear lever or handbrake near my cup holders, this works really well. The top of the base twists and expands the base to fit firmly in the cup holder. In my car, the position is ideal as it does not block any controls. You do ideally need both hands to load the phone as the side clips need to be pushed at the same time. So, with one hand, start to open them, then slide the phone in. Many holders are like this, but if you want easy, one handed phone-loading, then it may not be ideal. Once locked into the cup holder, there is plenty of movement. You can spin it like a propeller or twist it to turn the phone flat like a mini table. The only restriction is twisting it left and right. For example, if you position the phone to face you, then you can't twist it right around to the passenger. This is because the ball socket is supported by vertical brackets. This means the phone is very stable, but limits the amount of twisting. For me, I wanted stability and rarely need a passenger to see the phone. They could always fetch it out the holder if essential or you can loosen the grip in the cup holder and twist the whole unit. Overall, very well built, grips the phone well and no phone vibration.

So far this has proven to be a good choice. Feels solid and keeps phone steady. Just be sure to not over-tighten the feet on the base when installing to avoid it disintegrating like it has in some of the reviews. I just tighten until there’s slight resistance and have had no issues.

I’m on my third one of these, so have some experience. On the one hand it is simply the best cup-holder phone mount I can find. I use it every day to securely mount my phone where I can use Waze to augment my in-car sat nav. It also makes choosing music much easier to have the phone mounted firmly and easy to reach. When new it is sturdy and stable. It takes seconds to install by placing in the cup holder and screwing the collar which expands three padded legs to pressure fit the mount into the cup holder. It is nicely designed and the spring mount grips my iPhone well and it doesn’t fall out. My only gripe (and the reason I am on my third one) is the ball joint gives way, cracks and breaks after a year or so of use. The black plastic that forms the socket of the ball joint becomes brittle, possibly due to sunlight exposure, over time and then starts cracking. Once enough small pieces break off the ball joint becomes unusable and the phone won’t stay put. I haven’t found anything better. But if you purchase this please consider that you will have to replace it every year or so.
