No, you must use it with the Control Unit only.

Q: Is one unit for one car?

No it does every car...it's basically a race management system for your phone or tablet that counts laps and times and more.

Q: Can this take the place of driver display and lap counter?

Yes, and you can use it with SmartRace too (a third part app).

Q: Will this work with a MacBook Pro lap top?

I don't believe it will. It connects via the Carrera Race app and the app only works on mobile or tablet devices. I use it on my iPad and it works great.
