A nice looking light with good illumination
I bought this to replace a faulty stainless steel up and down light. It's subjective but I think this one looks much better. The light is from a known brand and is very well made. It has a PIR detector so that it only comes on when the ambient light level is low, and it detects movement. It requires a large Edison screw bulb (not supplied) with a maximum wattage of 60 W. I've used a 9 watt LED bulb, which gives plenty of illumination and is a 60 W equivalent. Inserting the bulb simply requires unscrewing two screws to remove the cover. The light fitting is mainly made of die-cast aluminium, painted white, with a clear plastic lens. The part that screws to the wall, the back plate, is plastic with a rubber gasket. This contains the wiring, there's not a lot of room, but more than in other light fittings I've had. The electrical connection is made to an electrical terminal strip and is easy to wire up with clearly marked connections (although the neutral is marked with an 'X'). The instructions are relatively clear but are in the form of pictures rather than words. To fit it I found it was easier to disconnect the existing wiring from the terminal block in order to remove the lamp body (make a note of where the 3 wires are connected to). This is then easier to position where to fix it to the wall without the lamp body hanging down. Also, I taped the back of the two bolts so that they don't fall out. Important: Ensure that the power is turned off. There are no fixing screws, but I had two suitable wall plugs and screws. There are two recessed holes in the back plate, and these need to be drilled for the fixing screws. It is important to ensure that the back plate is truly vertical because there is no adjustment once screwed to the wall. After reconnecting the internal wiring and wiring up to the mains, I tested the light to ensure it came on. I then mounted the light onto the backplate, being careful not to disturb the gasket, which is held by two domed nuts with washers. These are very small and it is a little tricky to screw them on without dropping them, particularly if on a ladder. However, once mounted, the light fitting is secure. I was initially disappointed that the light no longer came on after the fitting was mounted, but decided to leave it until the evening, when it was dark, before checking the wiring. When I tested it then the light came on and everything worked perfectly. There are two adjustments on the side of the detector, one to set at what ambient light level the light will come on at, and I presume the other is to set the period of time that the light stays on for. I may have to fine-tune these settings but the current ones seem to be fine. I'm very pleased with the light, it is superior to the one it replaced and gives out more than adequate illumination. The current Amazon price is very competitive compared to elsewhere.

It's a pretty little lantern.....but.... Please note position of the screw holes!
First one arrived and seemed sturdy and the design looked just the part ....but it was damaged! Got a very quick replacement via Amazon which seemed perfect until I came to fit it. For some bizarre reason the screw holes to fix to wall aren't level. I hadn't checked this as I was using a line by the wire entry hole as a horizontal guide. So, when I came to fit the screws to my drilled holes the lantern was very crooked. Stupid design as no reason for this, but stupid me for not checking. So take two, I was very careful to match my drill holes with the holes in the lamp and also make sure it would be level once fitted (not as easy as it should be!). Next was wiring in which was ridiculously fiddly even with my small woman's fingers. Then I came to fitting the lantern body which threw me another curve ball as the holes on the front plate of the lantern didn't match the position of the bolts on the base. (Aaaarrrggghhh!) If I fit the main body as it was, the whole thing was o a 45% angle! So, for a third time I had to remove the base plate and the drill the main fixing holes. That done I fitted the body of the lamp so that it finally sat level. But it had one last trick in store...because the holes were so out of line, one but only just fit on below the "lid" of the lantern. The nuts and washers are so tiny it would be very easy to lose them. They need to be tightened using a very small spanner or similar tool which easily marks the the black coating and one is so close to the "lid" that it was almost impossible to fit. That wasn't the case on the first lantern I received so you could get lucky and receive an undamaged light with holes in sensible places! I liked the lantern enough that I persevered and got it up but it took ages and I'm an experienced diyer. Photos are before I bought an Edison bulb which looks lovely in it. This light has no motion censor so I can't rate that and the brightness depends on the bulb fitted surely?! Despite all this I'm glad I bought it. It's a very reasonable price for an all metal lantern with real glass panes, similar items were 3 or 4 times the cost. Also check the dimensions as it's smaller than you'd think. I read reviews first and a fair few had been caught out. It's the perfect size for where I wanted it and I love the design. Despite all the hassle I love it.

Excellent PIR exterior lights
More expensive than some exterior lights, but this one is built to last. Very well made and simple to install. Doesn’t come with a bulb, but thats the only downside side. PIR and ambient light sensitivity can be tuned so that it comes on when your preferred level of darkness and proximity are reached. Well worth the extra money.

Well made and works well. Looks great
I really like these outdoor wall lights and specifically bought Philips as I trust the brand. Installation is a breeze and one thing that worth noting is that they have built in support for pass through which is great. It means I have a motion sensor one and connected to the same switch an non-motion sensor one. Triggering the sensor then switches both lights on which is superb. Build quality is good and mostly metal and to be honest having looked around these came in cheaper than ones at a certain DIY chain and in my opinion are better. They take E27 bulbs and I bought some Philips 1000lm LED bulbs which work really well. What would also look nice in these are the filament style led bulbs. You can control the sensitivity of the air and the duration of the light easily. Overall a superb and reasonably priced outdoor light which looks great.
