Gem English-Tamil/Tamil-English Dictionary: The world’s favourite mini dictionaries (Collins Gem)

Prints are okay. My Dad had one of these but by a different author. Will come in handy for me since I am trying to improve my mother tongue ie. Thamilz instead of spelling as Tamil. The pronunciation is THA as in ah MILZ as in fish, kiss. Thanks. I am 81 plus.🙏🏽😊.

It's not a bad little dictionary but there isn't any grammatical section and the translation is not always accurate. There are, I believe, a few mistakes as well. This is the problem with trying to learn the Tamil language, there are so many word variations. It is however very useful to have. Some words I could not find, but it is only a small dictionary after all. The price was very good. All in all I am happy with my purchase.

As is often the case with Indian language dictionaries, it's primarily made for Tamil speakers learning English and not really useful for English speakers learning Tamil. There's no introductory pronunciation guide for Tamil, only for English, and there are no phonetic transcriptions for any of the Tamil words, only for the English words. I guess it would be okay for some users, but as for someone trying to learn some Tamil this is going to be rather difficult to use. I'm used to Collins dictionaries making dictionaries that are useful for both learners and I've never had a problem using it before, so I assumed it would be better than Oxford dictionaries that only make Indian language dictionaries for people learning English, but I guess not. Otherwise this dictionary looks like it's just as good as other Collins dictionaries. Tamil speakers who are learning English will love this resource. The fewer amount of English speakers learning Tamil might want to look around a bit more or get very familiar with the Tamil writing system beforehand.

I cannot say for certain if this is a good or bad book for those that can read Tamil script. I was expecting romanized Tamil words so that I could attempt to translate Tamil words back and forth as an English speaker. Completely useless unless you are looking for a Tamil script translation.
