Does this take the place of toothpaste

I'm having orthodontic treatment and have to wear clear plastic retainers three times a week. My orthodontist recommends cleaning the retainers with toothpaste but to use a tablet dissolved in water instead of toothpaste once a week.

It removes the trace of saliva that every day washes do not remove. It also remove bad odors in the retainer because of the saliva and everyday use. You are supposed to use this product only once a week.
