I can't believe we went so long using keys like cavemen. In the olden days of last week, if we wanted to start our car to run for a minute or two because the latest polar vortex has swept in from the north, we had to remember to bring another set of keys to lock the deadbolt or we would have to shut the car off then go back and lock the door and then restart the car... madness. This all changed this past weekend. I got up the courage to enlarge the holes on our door so I could swap out the deadbolt for this glorious piece of technology. The instructions were fine, the only confusion was the back plate that is inside the house has a cam that must be vertical or the lock will not work. Once it was installed, the programming was very straight forward and easy to do. You can have 19 different user codes which can be disabled at any time. The keypad DOES light up when you push a key which is great for when you run late and forget to leave the outside light on. The action on this lock is a neat idea as well. You have to manually turn the deadbolt to lock and unlock (reviews I have read say this helps prolong the battery life) If the keypad is not engaged, this knob spins freely. To lock, you just have to push the Schlage button, which engages the knob and allows you to lock the door. To unlock, key in your code to engage it, then twist to unlock, too easy. Over all I am very happy with this and wish I had gotten one long ago. It is a heavy well built lock that has a bunch of great reviews around the web. The only negative thing I can say is that it only comes with one key. I wish it had two, but I can get another cut easily.

These are fantastic locks. They were not difficult to install at all. We put in 3 codes, easily. The beauty of these is you can remove an extra code easily. They are a great addition to our security and are stylish looking too. We ended up with the brushed nickel a the one we wanted was sold out. The color is perfect! I thought it would be a grayish color, but it has a bit of a brass undertone that works better with our doors.

This lock was easy to install, though it may have been helpful that it replaced a traditional dead bolt lock also made by Schlage. It was also easy to program with one exception (hence the 4 stars instead of 5). As a default, the lock and leave feature was enabled, meaning it could be locked from the outside by simply pressing the Schlage button and then rotating the thumb turn. After I programmed my own un-lock codes, the lock and leave feature became disabled and I now have to key a code in before I can lock it from outside. I have not been able to enable it again in spite of numerous attempts and following directions to the letter. I considered calling the company for help but they would likely have me go through the same procedure that hasn't worked and I guess it's not the worst thing in the world to have to key in the code before locking it. Schlage makes an attractive and sturdy product and I love not having to search through my purse for my keys. I also like that my adult children can get into my house even if they forget to bring their key and that, should the need ever arise, I can admit emergency help into my house even if I am unable to get to the door.
