I am not new to stamps but neither am I particularly knowledgeable. I bought this book based on the high ratings as I have decided to delve deeper into what is a fascinating hobby and needed a more rounded overview of the subject to help me decide just what direction to take as the subject is so vast. This book is a revelation as far as I am concerned. It has already provided me with an enormous amount of relevant and very helpful information which completely exceeds my expectations. I defy anyone to find a better intelligent and highly readable resource on the subject at what is an almost ridiculously modest price. Highly recommended as a general resource and fascinating reading with many hundreds of colour illustrations. Do be aware however that there are no prices given as that is not the purpose of this book. For that buy yourself a Stanley Gibbons guide for your chosen countries for collecting and do the job properly. Armed with both you will be very well equipped. Superb and a very firm five stars!

Very comprehensive and good illustrations

I purchased this for my husband who collects stamps. I only gave four stars because I don't use it. It is a lovely book from what I have seen. He seems pleased with it.

I'm a born again stamp collector - returning to stamps after 30 years. I found this book invaluable. It taught me a lot and helped rekindle my childhood interest in stamp collecting. It is also great value for money.

After reading the reviews, I believed that this book would be able to provide some history on various stamps and also a rough guide on price. I inherited two large shoe boxes full of stamps in great condition and as I have no interest in maintaining this hobby it seems such a waste for the person who clearly spent years collecting and I would like to find someone that will enjoy them as much as he clearly did collecting them. Some of them are beautiful and defiantly deserve there final resting place to be a bit classier than an old Reebok shoe box! This book has not helped me anymore than what I have found on the internet.

This book is exactly what the title suggests and more. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was very readable even the big blocks of text are engaging (you do need some interest in stamp collecting though).

I'm updating this review to add a star now that I've had a chance to read the book. It's fascinating, even just as a world history book, and it has made me want to collect stamps from around the globe. It's not an identification guide but it is a helpful place to start for that, too. Altogether an excellent intro to stamp collecting. More than half the book is about stamps around the world, so it's ideal for people collecting worldwide. The print is a bit small -- It's like a coffee table book shrunk to 7x9" -- but the design is beautiful and the book still has a solid feel to it, and the price is certainly good.
