My First Hiragana Activity Book (Dover Bilingual Books For Kids) Review: Simple and practical way to learn Japanese words through Hiragana - This book is in a simple yet effective format to introduce kids or even adults to Japanese words via Hiragana. Popular everyday items are depicted (picture) and also of benefit is an area to practice writing and the stroke order to write. A quick Hiragana reference is provided as well. Also, it can be a fun way to learn via coloring for kids. Towards the back has a list of English words for quick reference but what I also found helpful is the Japanese/English Word List. It's a thin book so it's portable and great when traveling like car rides, etc. Overall, a nice workbook. As a home educator, I recommend this book as a great way to introduce and teach Hiragana. Review: VERY helpful book to learn Japanese if you are a beginner. Good quality item! - I actually bought this for a 16 year old because he loves Anime and came up with the idea of wanting to watch the things he does in it's original language so he wanted to learn Japanese if he could. I haven't the foggiest idea of how to teach him so I decided to start way at the beginning and through a combination of online things we found and this book , we BOTH are able to comprehend a few things and my son even taught our dog some commands in Japanese that he responds better to than when we use English. I think the book was easy to use and made sense to a very complete beginner and I will continue to buy more books from this company. The pages are bright and clear and it has a relatively sturdy cover and I believe it was a very solid purchase of a very solid product.

Kids book that works just as good for adults.
I bought this workbook as a supplement to my Genki textbook and to help my 8 year old daughter learn hiragana with me. It has been a great help for myself and my daughter. The book has a bunch of simple word in Japanese that can be written using only hiragana. It has a cartoon picture of each word. The style is similar to an English kids picture dictionary.

A kid's book but fun for a grown up like me!
I have been studying Japanese off and on for several years and have purchased several books and CDs. This is a fun activity book to help practice the writing of Hiragana characters. I felt like a kid again and even colored in a few of the pictures inside. This is a workbook, so get your pencil ready and work. It's fun, it has great examples of the words using the characters, and it's rather inexpensive. Overall a good study addition for those working on Japanese writing, kids or adults!

For Practice
I bought this book for me, but maybe I'll share it with my 8 year old cousin. Even though the only Japanese word she remembers is "baka", there's nothing wrong with sharing the love. I'm not a kid but I'm learning self-taught Japanese (what am i saying?) and I've finally mastered hiragana to the point where i can write all the symbols without scratching my head, in about 6 mins. But as i'm moving on to katakana and kanji, I bought this and other children's books to help keep hiragana fresh in my mind, but without me having to write it down every morning like I've been doing. Even if it's a children's book, you shouldn't underestimate it. It's helpful for keeping the basics in mind when you move on to harder stuff.

Learn like a kid again
I bought this book for my husband who wanted to learn Japanese. We'd been talking about the old picture books we had as kids when we were learning English and remembered them as being both very effective and easy to use. When I saw the "My First Hiragana Activity Book" I thought this would be perfect. I bought it for him for Christmas and he has been delighted with it. Matching the pictures of animals and common items and activities to the Japanese words is an amazingly effective method of learning. It's like taking a short-cut to that child-like part of the brain that loves to learn. Highly recommended!

I like the idea that each symbol gets it's own page ...
I bought this for my son. I'm a Japanese teacher and hoped there would be more than just a vocab list and coloring pages. That's all this book is. Each page is a Japanese hiragana symbol and some vocab words you can color as well as write the symbol 6 different times. I read the other reviews saying you can use this book over and over again, I disagree unless it's for flashcards. Otherwise, it's a coloring book, not an activity book. The pictures are well drawn, my son (who is 6) understood what each picture was supposed to be for the most part (certain pictures were very specific, not just a flower but a morning glory, for example). Overall, I like the idea that each symbol gets it's own page with pictures to color on the page and the opportunity to write it a couple times. However, I feel this book is lacking when it comes to multiple uses.

Hiragana Activity Book
Wonderful book, although made for children, if you are just learning hiragana, then this will be a good help with showing pictures along with the romanji and the hiragana. I color the pictures with my colored pencils when I am working on the different words, and that helps me know where I left off, for I jump around through the book, and then I draw the same item as I am trying to remember into my journal, and when I remember it, then move onto the next item to work on.

Cute way to learn the hiragana plus some interesting words. I'd assume the book book is meant for kindergarten kids or maybe grand one. However, if someone is just learning, they ARE at kindergarten / grade one level. I got it for my 3. and 6. graders

Suitable for very young children, mainly as a colouring book, though there is a small chance some of the hiragana may creep into their brains whilst colouring in!

Good book for kids.
