Day Hiking Los Angeles: City Parks / Santa Monica Mountains / San Gabriel Mountains Review: A great guide to hiking LA - A great guide to hiking LA, Day Hiking Los Angeles is a fun, easy read that packs a lot of great info into a book that fits easily in the backpack. It provides easy to understand ratings, clear trail directions, and noteworthy natural and historical sites along the trail. The trail directions are particularly helpful when exploring unfamiliar spots as signage can be lacking or unclear. I also particularly appreciate the inclusion of city park trails, as sometimes I want to get out but don’t have time to go far. Would highly recommend, whether you’re new to town or have been here all your life. Review: A range of hikes for every hiker, beginner to advanced - I moved to Los Angeles earlier this year from Utah and was craving some good hikes after living in the city for only a few weeks. I know the internet is a huge source of information but often you can get lost on mediocre pages and unreliable information. I did the desertcart book search and bought quite a few hiking books for Southern California but this one stands out. We just completed an 11 mile loop yesterday from this book in the Santa Anita Canyon with an almost 2000 foot elevation gain. We've done multiple portions of the backbone trail in the Santa Monica/Malibu mountains. We're getting to know the Angeles Forest pretty well now. We hike every weekend and try to put in at least 8 miles at a time. We'll continue to knock out more hikes in this book as it is the perfect resource for anyone looking for a good hike in the greater Los Angeles area.

Great resource
A fantastic guidebook for hiking in and around Los Angeles. It has a great collection of images and maps for the hikes, and it has just enough data to get you on the trail without being overwhelming. For the current price, this is a great deal for a wealth of information on the trails surrounding Los Angeles and an easy recommendation for any outdoor adventurers.

So many trails to choose from, hurray!
Terrific and informative hiking guide to SoCal (LA) hiking trails that fits right in your pack. Easy trails to the more arduous are included, with details on how to get there and what to expect once you start. As an avid hiker, I have used Casey’s ‘Modern Hiker’ website as a go to for finding new trails and sharing links with friends on the ones to hit. Now all that info is an easy to carry book. Well done!

A valuable tool for the LA hiker
This is a very useful little book for people who want to hike in the LA area. Can't speak for every hike here (there are 125), but the three I've done since buying the book last month have been wonderful. Shreiner's descriptions of what you will see on the hikes, their difficulty, and his walking instructions so far are spot on. This is the only book of LA hikes I have, so I can't compare it to other LA hiking books.

This is hands down my favorite hiking book
I picked up this book recently because I was spending so much time on Casey’s website looking for hikes in and around the Los Angeles area. This is hands down my favorite hiking book. Casey tells you exactly what to expect along the hike. It’s so detailed and without the precise direction, I may have gone off track a few times. There’s something for everyone in this book. I highly recommend picking up your own copy.

Essential
Great book. I use it all the time to introduce me to new hikes in the LA area. Basically, a few years ago I went through and marked each hike the author said was a "must do" or something similar. Every one of them is a total winner, incredibly beautiful and great exercise.

Book-pages are physically too small
I like this book and it is well written and has a few more trails that others don't. It gives a small amount of background for the hike and the maps are easy to follow. HOWEVER, they made the overall size of the book way too small which I think is partially derived from the book pages being small. I have many other hiking books and this is the smallest of the lot. My eyesight is fair to good, so that is not the issue. If it was bigger print, then I would of given it a "4"!
