![Jack London's The Call Of The Wild: Dog of the Yukon [1997] [DVD]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/41On1gIkkCL.jpg)

TV movie adaptation of Jack London's classic gold prospecting novel. Buck the dog has not had an easy life; stolen from his original kindly owners in California, he is mistreated and beaten before being sold to French Canadian guide Perrault (Luc Morrissette). Taken to Yukon, Buck finds a place in Perrault's dog team, delivering messages to Dawson City. It is there that Buck is taken under the wing of John Thornton (Rutger Hauer) and his niece, Helen, who are off to search for gold in the Klondike. They are joined by widowed saloon owner, Maggie (Lynne Adams), and her son, Josh, and together set off to seek their fortunes. Review: Little gem of a movie with Rutger Hauer. - This is yet another underrated little gem starring my fave actor the late Rutger Hauer. Rutger is John Thornton, a kindly man living in long-ago America. A tale of survival it is based on the novel by Jack London. The dogs are beautiful especially the dog that plays Buck. Some scenes of cruelty though which had me quite upset but it really is a great little movie. Rutger really was a great actor and his loss is devastating for all his fans. Review: classic film - This film is an absolute classic of a fabulous book. Although both quite old to younger generations both should be read and watched to see how both medium can make a classic. The book is one for every generation to return to. I first read this forty years ago and have watched the film over again. Fantastic.

An excellent film to watch and it was incredibly close to the book.
This was an excellent film to watch and it was incredibly close to the book. The ending was slightly different though which for me was a little off putting having just recently read the book itself. Although I completely understand the angle that the movie took on the ending. They did well with the dogs in this film, and I just loved Buck (I want a dog like him)... and luckily they did tone down some of the violence from the book as that would have been incredibly difficult to watch!

a moving story
A person who loves animals in general, and dogs in particular will be intrigued by the insight the authour of the book has shown when writing the story from the perspective of the animal. Moreover, the cast of this particular version of film attempted to portray the story quite well. It was presented in a very sensitive manner respecting the animals used in the film. The only disappointing issue is that a film, in general, by virtue of the project, cannot give all the details that have been included in the original book.

The film is better quality than my VfHS
I purchased the DVD to replace my VHS copy. The film is better quality than my VfHS. I have added it to my film collection. The DVD arrived on time and in good condition. Charles

Fair
Not bad, but not as good as White Fang by the same author, Jack London.

Charming.
Charming film with the much missed Rutger Hauer as one of its main human characters. An afternoon film for all ages.
