Permatex 81182 Gear Oil RTV Gasket Maker, 3 oz (Packaging May Vary)

When you work on your differential, you must decide three things: gasket or no gasket, RTV or no RTV and which RTV is best? My preference is to first stick the gasket to the cover with a small bead of this RTV. Then, apply a small bead of this RTV to the differential housing. This way prevents an accidental transfer of RTV from the cover to the ring gear if the cover touches the gear. Using only the socket and your hand, tighten the bolts in a crisscrossing star pattern until they are as tight as you can get them. The RTV package says let it cure for 1 hour, so let it cure for 1 hour. Then, using a torque wrench, slowly increase the bolt torques using the star pattern until all bolts are properly torqued. Let it cure for 23 hours before introducing the gear oil. Following this approach, I have never had a leak. Nice product. Does what it says, but you must follow the instructions.

I've been using this exact product in all of my front and rear differentials. The manufacturer says this product is specifically made for differentials and in dealing with the differential oil characteristics. I've never had a leak or any issue with this product. I believe in the manufacturer's hype. My friend uses the Permatex "Red" gasket maker with great success but given enough time and or mileage the "Red" gasket maker will leak in a differential application whereas the "Green" gasket maker does not leak. I recommend this product for this application.

Used this sealant on the rear diff cover on my '21 F-250. It sealed just fine but I would rather have a gasket.

Seems to work well. No leaks so far. The only negative is that the RTV is very thick and takes quite a bit of pressure to get out of the tube.

Used this product on a 2010 ford f150 diffrential. I've used this several times with no issues. One bit of advise, many videos out there on YT and many apply the sealant on the diffrential cover but when you're on your back trying to put it in place, one tend to touch the sealant smearing it. It is much easier to put the sealant on the differential housing first and then putting the cover. It avoids touching the bead of sealant.

Just get the one for the application. Blue doesn't work on everything. Ease of application? It's a freaking liquid gasket. It never goes on easy. Or clean.
