Making Ribbon Leis & Other Gifts of Aloha

I learned to make simple leis some years ago while visiting Maui. I’d forgotten how to make them (several varieties) in the intervening years, and wanted to teach the art to some little girls. No luck finding instruction locally. However I found this book on Amazon, and I was not only able to use it to teach, but found many of the girls could learn on their own from this book. It was a worthwhile purchase!

I Purchased many fresh flower leis when I visited Hawaii, but I wanted to learn how to make the ribbon leis. I haven’t tried one yet and I hope the price of the book isn’t just the beginning of a very expensive hobby is ribbon can’t be very cheap for the number of yards that you need.

I purchased two books to make leis for my daughter's high school graduation. She loved them as did her best friend who I made two leis for as well! Some instructions were a bit too intense for me but the leis that I wanted were relatively easy.

Was happy, but this is not what I thought it was.

First off, i love the book, but it feels like something is missing. I'm a visual person so i was expecting more pictures for the instructions. So I will have to improvise.

I was looking for something *different* to give as graduation gifts. On a recent trip to Hawaii, I noticed a lot of leis being made and thought they were just beautiful. I came across his book and purchased it.

Looks deceiving. It's only a few pages and not really worth it. I think I learned more on YouTube. Nothing special honestly.

リボンレイをあるHPのキットで始めて、すごく楽しくはまってしまいました。リボンレイの本は、ハワイに行った友達に頼んだのですがこれというものがないと言われ諦めていたのですが、この本はすごく良かったです。 英語がほとんど読めないので残念ですが、作り方でプルメリアを作る際に 器具を使って縫い始めのリボンを止めていましたのでその事に衝撃！！ 英語が読めればな～～～ このシリーズの「ribbon leis２」と「eylash crochet leis」 の販売を是非やってください。どうぞよろしくお願いします。

昨今のフラ人口増加、実感としてあります。ちょっと前までは、習う側が選べるほどハラウがなく、衣装や小物も「言われるがままに買うしかない(T-T)」なんてこともよく聞きました。でも今は、私のハラウのように「出来るだけお金はかけないで工夫も楽しみましょう♪」ってお教室が増えて当然の流れですよね。ハワイアンキルトのように、もう少しすればきっと、日本語の本も色々出るのでしょうが… それまでは、とりあえずこれをバイブルに頑張りましょう(笑) 写真が大きくなかなかキレイで、洋書にありがちな“安っぽい”感がないのが嬉しい。 肝心の英語もそんなに難しくはありません（総てインチ表示なので、そこは慣れが必要ですが）。 材料のリボンが、ハワイとは規格が違うので同じ物がなかなか手に入りにくいし、日本製だと張りがあって(値も張る)、正確に作っても正直まったく同じ出来にはならないのですが、この本を買うくらいの方はきっと手芸好きでしょうし、自分なりのアレンジもまた楽し、です(^-^) 実際、お月謝払ってレイ教室に通っているうちのインストラクターのと並べて遜色ない物が出来ましたヨ（というか、こっちのほうがイイくらい・笑)

オールカラーで、紙質もよく、リング製本なのでページが勝手にめくれるストレスがないところなどが長所だと思います。スケールもついています。 内容に関しては、一つのレイにつき、作成中の写真が一つないし三つずつしかありません。 つまり工程をほとんど文章で説明しているので、パーツの折り方やリボンの縫い方など、英語力がないと理解が苦しくなります。 あと、ちゃんとした完成品の写真がないのには弱りました。 ピンボケ写真でだいたいの見当はつきますが、初心者にとって模範作品がないというのは心細かったです。
