that's how ours is set up. the lamp "shade" rests on the metal wire screen on top of the enclosure.

Q: Can this be used in a church?

It is a reptile heat light used in habitats. If I were you get just a simple heat lamp bulb for under 10 bucks. If using this for sunlight for plants yes it would work
