Super slim travel lens
The VILTROX 28mm pancake lens surprised me. The biggest win is just how compact it is while still having autofocus. It’s super thin/small, which makes for an awesome travel lens when you don’t want to carry anything bulky. The autofocus itself is quick and reliable, and for the price the image quality is better than I expected. It’s not going to match high-end glass, but for what it costs and the size you’re getting, it holds up really well. I found it to be a great lightweight option for walking around or throwing in a bag without thinking twice. The part I didn’t love was the locked aperture. I get it’s a pancake lens so there are limits, but still, it would’ve been nice to have some flexibility there. Also the lens cap design is both clever and a little frustrating. I liked that it’s built in so you don’t have to worry about losing it, but I had it flip open or shut a few times when I was sliding the camera in and out of a bag. Overall though, I’d still say this lens is worth it if you want something small, light, and easy to carry around with decent performance. It’s so small I’d say it is a way to have a functional/useful body cap!

Lots of character at a great value.
Obviously this isn't going to be the sharpest lens you buy. The size, weight, and character you get with this lens make it extremely portable and provide a very nice feel to your images. I think if you're looking for a fun travel lens or a good street photo lens, this is an easy buy at less than $100. I really enjoy the look and I think is makes for a good casual portrait lens as well.

Fun lens, very sharp, but not without its shortcomings
As most of you probably already know, this is a fun little lens. It's barely larger than a body cap, has the slick integrated lens cover, and manages to squeeze autofocus into that tiny package. Sharpness is remarkably consistent from corner to corner in my chart tests - as sharp or sharper than any other pancake out there with the possible exception of the Fujifilm XF 27 or Voigtlander options. It doesn't quite have the microcontrast and color quality as those competitors but it's no slouch, and for the price I have zero complaints. I wasn't expecting this level of clarity for under 100 bucks. The fixed f/4.5 aperture doesn't bother me either. One of my other favorite street lenses is the AstrHori 14mm f/4.5. I think that aperture strikes a great balance between functionality in most light and good sharpness with just a little character across the DOF. It isn't a low light monster or anything, so temper your expectations in low light and expect to crank your ISO. On the downside there is no manual focus option, so trying to milk what little bokeh/defocus you can out of the lens can be tricky, as you have to use single point AF and nail your spot. Also there are no filter threads so you can't use any ND filters in bright light, or a CPL or anything, which is something that I find very useful on the AstrHori f/4.5 lens. Next, the AF isn't the greatest. Even in good light and with static subjects the AF hunts a bit and may take a couple tries to lock, especially if there's not good contrast in your focus area. Forget about any complex focus tracking, or even using basic AF-C in most cases. Again, not surprising given the price point. Just be realistic with your focusing expectations and you'll be ok. Lastly, the MFD and close-up focusing aren't great so don't expect to get right up on your subject with this lens. It needs a little more room to breathe than you might expect. All in all it's a great street lens, and it's totally pocketable on smaller bodies like an X-A, X-E or X-Tx0 series. Definitely a screaming bargain, despite its flaws.

Not to my liking
Not what I was expecting. Compared to the 37mm they have I feel limited in the kinds of pictures I can take. I was also have issues where my camera will freeze and I have to take out the battery and even removing the lens to correct it. But the quality of the photo are still good. Focus was decent especially on the Fuji X-E1. And the compact nature of the lens is amazing but it wasn’t just for me.

Small and fun to use
So compact, perfect for travel. The focus is good. The lens is so light that it makes the camera fun to take everywhere. Definitely good price for a good lens.

Very soft, get what you pay for.
Love all my other Viltrox lenses, but this one was just bad. I don’t know if it was a dud or all of them are like that, but my copy was very soft in all conditions. Also made my camera (X-T5) freeze up a couple of times. Had to return it.

The Nomads Lens
The VILTROX 28mm f/4.5 pancake lens is incredibly small and light; it practically is a lens cap. It makes for the perfect, everyday subtle lens to get your camera to a pocket-able size without losing your ability to have a spontaneous photo whenever, wherever. It's clear that this lens isn't a complicated masterpiece, but instead delivers a charming image with a soft bloom quality to it, which creates a filmic look when shooting. This bloom quality looks like using a mist filter, while the highlights are soft enough not to feel manipulated, but instead natural. The 28mm field of view enables the camera to be used for street, travel, and casual efforts, and the filmic renderings are just charming enough to make it a joy to shoot. However, the major drawback is the f/4.5 aperture, which isn't horrible, but does become limiting at times, especially in low-light settings where a more shallow depth of field is desired. Yet after spending time with the lens one adapts—focusing more on composition, subject distancing, and lighting to get the desired affect. This isn't necessarily a technical marvel, but rather something that provides soft qualities and portability that outweigh potential optical difficulties. Sometimes there's something to be said about nostalgic filmic features that end up being surprisingly compelling in an otherwise tiny pancake lens.

Great everyday carry
I got this lens specifically for rising my bike and during transit. It fits perfect in my pocket (attached to Fujifilm xt3). The clarity has been quite impressive.

Ansonsten ohne Korrektur.

It doesn’t work. It looks blurry all the time, the camera doesn’t shoot. I tried multiple times and it’s a no go. Don’t buy it!!!!

So amazed how well this lens works and how it looks on my Fuji xs10. It’s pretty much an all round lens, so perfect for everyday use and also when on vacation with the camera weight being much lighter. Very happy overall
