A great low cost RIS-V SBC.
OS was easy to image and worked out of the box. Performs a lot better than the VisionFive 2 offering faster CPU and GPU performance. The software was easy enough to set up. This is a great upgrade from a VisionFive 2 while being more affordable and a significant advancement for RISC-V.

An interesting, mostly usable risc-v system
I have played with a number of risc-v sbc's, and this is certainly the best so far. Pros: - runs an _official_ ubuntu port, with gnome desktop, and 6.6 kernel. - 100% open source for everything needed to run, including SBI, u-boot, kernel, and ubuntu. - It's really easy to put the firmware in the SPI flash, and boot from uefi ssd. This works really well, and the flash layout is even well documented. - It runs reasonably well, even with gnome. The overall speed is similar to a RPI 4 running a simple raspian. Cons: - the biggest problem is that at least one key application (chrome/chromium) does not have a current port to the X1 risc-v chip. The older port, which does run, is so old that google search refuses to serve to it. Not being able to access google search is kind of a deal breaker, although it does work (unsafely) with duckduckgo. - graphics are a bit slow, particularly scrolling in chromium, although that could be the lack of a current browser port. - While the chip supposedly supports secure boot with keys in eeprom, this is not documented, and english tools are not available. Overall, this is a great low cost way to try out risc-v, but the software support is not quite ready for production.

Didn't like where it was pulling updates from.
Wouldn't recommend it at all. Took a bit to get it to recognize the microSD card, tried a couple different ones but finally got it loaded up the Orange Pi version of Ubuntu from their website and when you ran the command to update everything, I noticed that it was pulling from Huawei servers. Turned it off immediately and returned it. It has good specs but I'll rather pay a bit more and get a Raspberry Pi instead.

Excellent value SBC
Two functional NVME can be used simultaneously. Eight cores is great! CPU runs hot, I decided to under clock and use a little heat sink to help this out. Might upgrade with heat pipes.

No software updates
Chromium is not safe or updated and Google search doesn’t even work on the Ubuntu image which is only downloadable from a public Google Drive, which is super shady. I would trust this farther than I could throw.

a step in the right direction
I received the 4gb model rather than the 8gb I ordered, so the software I’m attempting to port won’t build. Also, don’t change your hostname or your Linux install may be rendered unusable, and the display output maxes out at 1080p. Other than that, this board is still miles ahead of the VisionFive 2, in that it’s fast enough to render a Gnome desktop. It also runs cool enough to use with just a copper plate and aluminum heatsink.

Great entry board for RISC-V
8GB model, with 256 GB SSD. Great board needing better support. OrangePi OS (android) is in Chinese. Ubuntu/Gnome/Snaps is too heavy for this lightweight board, and is hard to use with touchscreen, though it did install nicely. Maybe just need to adjust some settings. Looking forward to other distros for it.
