My daughter loves this along with all the other Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Mandoran books I have purchased from Amazon
We are a military family with lots of diversity. I am a fourth generation Army veteran. This book is exactly what she wanted to speak to all her friends and family she is learning more than 4 languages at once. I have enough trouble speaking my own language. I can't keep up with all the slang our youth continues to create! Not to mention text lingo. I'm still trying to figure out what ROFLMBO means. My kids just shake their head at me and laugh.

Love it!
Love it! My order came on time and was in perfect shape. I ordered used and it is as good as new. I'm brushing up on my language skills and this book makes it feel super easy so relearning this will be a breeze. I can't wait to get started.

very good, but too much expected for beginner
This is a very good aid to learning the Japanese language, especially with the addition of the audio CD. However, gave it only 4 stars because of one annoying feature--they introduce the kanji reading without any help to a beginner. I have mastered the hiragana and katakana alphabets, and they do explain them quite adequately, however, kanji, as any student of Japanese knows, takes many years to learn, especially for those of us who are not in a setting where it is naturally learned. Overall, very useful book and I recommend it--but get the one with the CD, any chance to hear the language is beneficial.

The Audio on the CD bugs me
I'm just starting out with this book, and may update this review as I use it more, but, so far, the audio CD bugs me.For instance, track 4, where they give an example of "Pitch Accent"'ame' can be "rain" or "candy" depending on where the pitch is hit in the spoken word. They have a male voice verbalize "rain" and a female voice verbalize "candy"If we're to listen close to the very slight difference between the two ways the same word is spoken, why muddle things by not only having two different people read each of the two words, but even worse, one with a low male voice and the 2nd with a high female voice? They did the same thing with words like Obasan, which could mean Aunt or Grandmother depending on how long the 2nd vowel (a) is held when the word is spoken.

what a fun book to learn Japanese
I spent three years in Japan as a child not learning Japanese formally but listening in passing. This is a fun book with easy to understand explanations and good CD pronunciations. It is giving me a great structure of language to my childhood memories. I would buy this book even if I were new to the language.

Can't access CD on kindly version
Does anyone know whether the kindle version can access the CD? The e-book doesn't seem complete and useful without the CD.

Great Buy
I really enjoy this book I owned the first edition and had to buy the second edition with the audio cd has really helped with the lessons. If you own the first edition then you really do not need this one but if you dont definetly get this book makes learning many japanese subjects better.
