No. I usually fold the fabric into quarters to find the center of the piece of fabric. I mark this square with a straight pin and know that it is the very center of the design. Then I look at the design instructions to determine the design center, and this is the where I begin to cross stitch.

Are the threads regular cotton color, or kind of "shiny silk" cotton? Sorry, I don't know how to explain better.

My most recent cross stitch kit had "shiny silk" threads rather than flat cotton. They are easier to use guide through the material, and I liked using them. I hope this helps.
