Nonfiction Reading Comprehension: Social Studies, Grade 5: Social Studies, Grade 5 Review: Educationally works - Purchased this workbook for part of our homeschool curriculum. I have seen my son's reading comprehension soar. The stories are interesting and he really enjoys this book. I do too. Already five weeks into our year, halfway into the book and purchased the science to complete next. Great addition to our homeschool routine. Review: Great supplemental workbook - My 9yo (rising 4th grader) needed a little something to supplement his reading and comprehension over the Summer. I found this on desertcart and have been very pleased with the content. The stories are short (typically one page), but have some interesting "fun facts" that keep kids interested in the reading. Would purchase this book again!

Good amount of information for a younger grade level
This book has a broad collection of I formation from places and events around the world. It’s a little light on details even though it’s for 5th grade. My 5th grade daughter is being homeschooled and given the chance, I would’ve gone with the 6th or 7th grade book since this is below her reading level after looking through it. I might go ahead and save it for my 2 younger girls for their 3rd grade social studies when they get there and buy my oldest something a little more challenging for this year.

Great for our homeschooling
I went through the 3-4 grade version of this book with my daughter and immediately bought the 5th grade version when we finished. The stories are interesting and tend to focus on unique information about historical events and people. They're packed with info without feeling dry. Each story is only one page long, and the questions are clearly written. They cover different aspects as well, such as main idea, details, and vocabulary. I love that we can work on comprehension and learn about history at the same time, in a fun and interesting way. Highly recommend. I only wish the series went into higher grades!

My son actually does these!
For a list of reasons, anxiety being at the top, my soon to be 6th grader did not perform well the second half of 5th grade. He says he hates school and his reluctance to do school work backs up his statement. I gave these a go hoping to catch him up on some topics, or at least keep school skills in practice. He had all kinds of drama about being "forced by mom" to do summer work. However, I walked him through this book showing him the design. It is not overwhelming! Short stories, short vocabulary lists, one sentence (not 10 like school) and one page of comprehension questions. It appeared "doable" to my reluctant child (He is bright, but overly anxious about any writing task). The first day was dramatic getting started, but the stories are entertaining and we saw some reluctance give way. He now does 2 stories per day during and after breakfast. Great project for my reluctant kid!!!!

Good series. will do more in the future
This is a good reading book. I like that the information in the reading is real historic situations.

Would be great if I could make copies and didn't need 2 books...
I love this series of books and, being a teacher in the state of Washington, this is about the only resource out there that is easy to use and directly linked to the standards and available by a specific grade level for OUR test. Other curricula claim to be linked to the standards, but then when you get them, that's actually not the case. This has each EALR spelled out and gives you questions for each one. The only problems are that you have to buy the answer key separately from the "workbook" which means that all the information on what the answers are and how to solve them is in another book. This also includes the alignment to the standards and how many of each question go with each standard. Finally, the BIGGEST problem is you can't copy any of it--it says so in great big letters at the bottom of each page. I really try to adhere to copyright guidelines, but there just isn't anything else out there like this; believe me I'd look. I wish this publisher would give us teachers a break and release a book for classroom use!

Not overwhelming for 10 year old with autism 😁
I’m a former teacher and homeschool mom of 2 kids—currently using this book for my 10 year old son who has autism. I’m very impressed! The stories are informative and engaging and he really looks forward to reading them, which is usually not the case. I attribute this to the way the book is designed: interesting stories, detailed enough to be challenging, yet not too long, lengthy and overwhelming. He enjoys searching for the vocabulary words. Highly recommend for kids who struggle with focus and comprehension or those who just need practice with comprehension!
