Medieval Costume in England and France: The 13th, 14th and 15th Centuries (Dover Fashion and Costumes) Review: Good book, good quality. - Lots of pictures, good text. Review: A Great Resource to Begin Researching 13th - 15th Century Costume - I believe the author did an excellent job of describing the clothing worn by Europeans between the 13th to 15th Centuries. More illustrations of the progression of medieval styles of dress, and more authentic illustrations from primary sources rather than the modern black and white drawings used, might have been more more helpful. Still, I'd say that this small, reasonably priced book did a very good job of laying out a nice groundwork to build upon. Costumes of peasants, clergy, gentry, nobility and royals are included in this small volume. Hairstyles, headdresses, embroidery and quite a bit of jewelry and embellishment worn with the costumes of the times, as well as a few other items of interest to this subject, are also included. The author does provides basic patterns to recreate much of the clothing depicted and described, although I am fairly sure these patterns weren't drawn from the actual patterns of the times for constructing such costumes. They will get you started however. "Medieval Costume in England and France" is a good place to begin the research needed to create the costumes of these times. I would advise anyone serious about getting into medieval costuming to build a library that includes books with better details and illustrations than provided in Mary G. Houston's book. BUT her book is a great starting point, especially at it's very affordable price. All in All, I give it my highest recommendation. A+++++

Well-written and researched
This is an excellent book! Well-written with many pictures. The author has obviously researched the subject of medieval clothing well.

This is a good overview of medieval costume
This is a good overview of medieval costume. There are certainly more detailed books out there, but I like this for the overview it gives. The drawings are recreations from other sources - sculptures, stained glass windows, and other artwork of the period. The text gives detailed descriptions of the garments, though not a whole lot on how they are constructed. For authentic construction details, I highly recommend "Medieval Tailor's Assistant" by Sarah Thursfield.
