Sound quality - outstanding. Everything else - not that great
As the title says, the sound quality is second to none - as expected from AK.But everything else... subpar. The UI is slow, outdated and sluggish. The battery barely lasts a day - other products on the market are substantially better. As much as I respect AK, there are better products on the market at this price range.

Bluetooth difettoso.
Peccato.

Great Player
Great portable player! My ears are not the greatest anymore and I'm not sure I can distinguish between CD quality and high resolution files, but I DO hear the difference between (most) MP3 and CD audio. I wanted a player where I can play my CD files (used to be wav files) and works for me.Pros:- Sound is great with my headphones (BOSE and Sony)- Slim player that fits well in my jacket pocket- Great that it has the physical buttons for forward/back/pause/play on the player. That already is a huge improvement over listening music from a smartphone.- Great user interface- Line out functionality is great. I can hook it up to my home stereo with one simple cable.- File transfer is easy since the PC just recognizes the player as an external hard drive. But it does take a while to copy all the data.Cons:- The interface is a little sluggish when fully loaded with albums, but it is no big deal.- Battery life is not that long, but I usually keep the screen on when I have it sitting on my desk.- The volume knob could be better, you can't really turn it when it lays flat on the desk. You have to pick the player up because the knob is on the bottom facing side. Also the knob should make slightly bigger adjustments for my taste.- The player has very sharp edges, so if feels somewhat uncomfortable when holding it. Again, not a big deal.- The internal 60GB only hold half my library of flac files, so it would be great if it had 128 GB. (I know you can use an external card, but I don't want to do that)- (This one is not really the players fault): I had to convert all my WAV file to FLAC because wav-files don't have album art embedded so the player would not show the album art at first. I used dbpoweramp (payed) and MP3Tag (free) to go through my entire library and converted all my files to flac. Is not a bad idea anyway, since it saves about 30% of space.Bottom line, great player, all the cons are nitpicks.

Terrible Software: Buyer Beware!
The AK Jr. is beautifully designed—physically. But that's where it ends. The onboard software is really terrible. I have now owned this hi-res music player for about a week, and right from the start, I've had nothing but problems. I'll begin with a list of "cons," and then, for balance and fairness, I'll list the "pros."CONSBAD SYSTEM SOFTWARE: The AK Jr. comes with 64GB internal memory, which would be great—if the software worked. I began copying my music collection to the internal memory and all seemed to be going well until I apparently exceeded the storage limit. However, instead of a warning such as "you have exceeded the device memory capacity" or "no storage space left," the device just hung up and froze. I couldn't even eject it from my desktop. I pulled the plug to stop and restart the device. However, on restart, I could neither delete music files nor transfer them to the external micro SD card. Clearly the software was corrupt. When I inserted my micro SD card (with about 150 GB of music), it read it okay. The SD card worked just fine. But I was now missing the 64 GB of internal memory. So I took out the SD card and reformatted the internal memory. As expected, it wiped everything. I then reloaded music back onto the internal memory, about 56 GB (well within the 64GB limit). That seemed to work fine (all I lost were the free sample tracks that came with the device). I rebooted and it started to "scan" the files. When it reached "2804" songs it froze again, having scanned only about half of the files in the internal memory. I tried this a few times, but it always stopped scanning at "2804" songs. I then reinserted the SD card to see if it worked, however, it stopped scanning again at "2804" songs (about 1/8 of the way through the progress bar). The final straw happened last night when none of the functions worked—except the faulty scanning. I could not access any of the onscreen options to even play a track. It simply froze at "2804" songs.CLUMSY USER INTERFACE: Wth about 150 GB of music on the external SD card, the only way to find an individual song, album, or artist is to scroll on the touch screen. If I wanted to locate anything with a name that begins with "T" or "Y" or "Z" (toward the end of the alphabet) it took AGES to scroll down. The software design is not user friendly at all!COVER ART: Another example of flawed software design shows up when the album art for about 80 per cent of the music got attached to the wrong artist or album. That is unacceptable.PROSPHYSICAL DESIGN: As already noted, I like the physical design of the AK Jr., and really wanted to love this thing. I bought the third-party leather case (from Miter) and together they look really great. The construction of the device is first-rate—solid, ergonomic, and the physical scroll button for volume control works really well.EXTERNAL SD: I bought a 200 GB micro SD card, which worked just fine. I own a Classic iPod, which I loved, but found its 160GB of storage too small and, for some reason, Apple refuses to add external SD options to their devices. When Apple dropped the Classic iPod, I knew it was time for a change.COMPETITION: I first checked out the Sony Walkman hi-res player [ASIN:B00OCJRX8C Sony Walkman NWZA17SLV 64 GB Hi-Res Digital Music Player (Silver)], which I really loved. I have used it for nearly a year and it has worked flawlessly. I highly recommend the Sony NWZA17. However, I wanted a backup hi-res player and when I saw the Astell & Kern AK Jr. I ordered one. While both players produce really good quality hi-res music (I cannot tell the difference between the Sony and the AK), the Sony is more compact, but does not feel as sturdy as the AK Jr.Bottom line: I am returning the AK Jr. today. If the software had worked—even despite the ridiculous interminable scrolling—I'd have given this 5 stars. But because of the flaws that make this unusable, I'd give it 1 star. I have boosted it to 2 stars because of the really nice physical design.Astell & Kern (aka "iRiver"): You need to vastly improve your software design if you wish to remain competitive.UPDATE (a few days later): I did return the AK Jr. and ordered a second one. Well, it also had the same problems as the first one—it never completed scanning the music files (perhaps about 10%) and then froze. I used a 200GB micro SD card (as advertised here on Amazon in conjunction with the AK Jr) and loaded about 90 GB of music. No go. In other words, the only music I could play on the device was whatever I had in the internal 64 GB. As a result, I have now returned this second one, too.The good news: I ordered the Cowon Plenue D (with 32 GB onboard) and then inserted the loaded SD card—no problems whatsoever. As noted earlier, I liked the design of the AK Jr. and had it worked, I would have kept both. But nice design is useless if it doesn't work! By comparison, I really love the design, feel, small size, and robust quality build of the Cowon Plenue D. Even if the AK Jr. had worked and I had to choose just one hi-res player, without hesitation I'd go for the Cowon Plenue D. Besides the great, neat, compact, and sturdy design, the music quality is stunning. An all-round winner.Unfortunately, I have to caution anyone from buying the Astell & Kern AK Jr. There was no way to contact them from their website to report the problem (there "international" site is all in Korean!). I say forget Astell & Kern until they improve the reliability of their products and upgrade their customer service to communicate in English.Bottom line: I have downgraded my rating for the AK Jr. to a single star. However, I give five stars-plus for the Cowon Plenue D.

So, I'm really torn about this player. I was looking for a replacement to my iPod Classic-- which I loved. I take my music players with me wherever I go. I thought maybe I should spend a little more money and find an entree into hi res players. I didn't want to break the bank and I had some heartburn about buying and audio product without listening to it first. Eventually, I took the plunge and purchased the AK Jr. When I first got the player I was using an inexpensive pair of earbuds. The player sounded good, but to my ears, not quite as good as the iPod Classic. Later, I bought a pair of Bose QC 25s because I wanted a wired connection for better sound quality. I also bout the FiiO portable amplifier. After adjusting the on-board EQ of the AK Jr., and setting the amp up, I listened with the Bose headphones. I have to admit, I was completely under-whelmed.The sound is ok to my ears. The player doesn't seem to have very good staging and the highs don't seem to have a good middle ground. The highs are either way sharp, or they are really flat-- no in between. The bottom end is the same-- either really heavy, or non-existent. On some tracks the bass sounds good-- nice and punchy with some heft, and other times it is flat and barely detectable. However, the sound issues could be a result of the source files. I have a variety of music file types-- FLACs, mp3, mp3. It is very noticeable when the file format changes. For example, I have a Sting FLAC that sounds really good, but then I have CDs ripped that are almost unlistenable.I'm trying to find a way to rip CDs that are higher bit rates, so far, no luck.Don't get me started on the UI. The UI on the AK Jr. is awful!! And from what I have read, iRiver doesn't seem to be too interested in improving the UI or firmware for the player. Nor does iRiver appear too concerned about user issues. The instruction manual is pathetic. There are virtually no descriptions for the features on the player. The UI is very cumbersome and not user friendly. I am using an SD card in addition to the on-board 64 gig storage. Most of the time the album covers aren't loaded with the music and the display is sparse. So overall, I am non-committal when it comes to this player. It seems to lack the sound quality I was expecting from something that is 'High resolution'. Even with better headphones and a portable amp, the AK Jr, seems a little colorless and dull.
