Q: how do i open this cutter? I havent got any clue.

Looking at the cutter as in the Amazon image, at the top of the cutter handle that has the ‘CK 3744’ marking, there is a pawl that holds the cutter shut. Simply rotate the pawl so that it disengages and then the cutter is free to open. Note that you may need to pull the handles apart as the opening spring is not all that strong.

Q: Does it cut through tough barbed wire?

I use mine to cut 600lb 64 strand wire for shark traces with no problem.

Q: I need to cut through welded wire mesh, galvanised steel 2.5mm wire, 12 gauge. will they do this?

From my experience of cutting the strands of barbed wire (which they do easily) I think the 2.5mm wire mesh should be no problem. The jaws open easily to about 4mm.
