Hello, this set is intended for kids that are 8 years or older so this would be a great opportunity to build with him! There are many types of skill levels when it comes to building LEGO kits, so as long as they have the experience you may just have to kick back and watch the master at work. My nephew loves it when I see him conquering a tough build, he smiles at how impressed I am!

Q: is there a pickaxe? or do you have to get one seperate

This LEGO Minecraft set does not include a pickaxe piece, though it does include a few sword pieces.
